How YourCA works, step by step.

How do I claim my retention back?

  1. Open Financials, then Claims, then the draft claim. Under the claim total, find the section Retention asked back on this claim.
  2. From Handover, when a release is due, press Put it on the next claim on the Retention held line. It takes you to Claims. Continue the draft, or start the next claim if there is no draft.
  3. YourCA shows what each release comes to under your contract. Beside each one are the clause it came from and the day it falls due. Press the release you claim and it goes on. Nothing is added until you press. You can enter a different amount instead.
  4. It goes on the claim as its own line, and it adds to what the builder must pay. Retention held comes off a claim; retention asked back goes on.
  5. YourCA withholds no retention on this line. You already earned it, and retention already came out of it once. To withhold again would hold the same amount twice.
  6. On the ordinary claim, the line carries no GST, because you charged GST on the full value of the work when you claimed it. If your contract charges GST after retention comes out, the retention was never taxed, so the release carries GST. YourCA follows the method your own claim uses.
  7. YourCA checks the amount against the retention actually held on this job. If you ask back more than is held, the claim cannot be approved, and YourCA says by how much.
  8. Serve the claim as usual. After that, the figure is frozen with everything else on the claim. To ask for more, use your next claim.
