How YourCA works, step by step.

How do I do a takeoff?

  1. Open the Quote tab and pick Takeoff in its band.
  2. Press Add layer for each thing you price, such as FL1 floor finish. In full screen, the plus beside the layers adds one too. Pick area, length or count and a colour. A length can carry a wall height, which prices it in square metres. Waste allowance adds a whole percent to the quote quantity.
  3. Open a tender drawing with the folder in the tools row and set its scale, off the printed scale or a length you know. A sheet you open here lists on the Takeoff only, not on the Tender walk: the two keep their own sheets.
  4. Style a layer from the tool bar or from the colour square on its row: Style sets its colour from the shared colour chart, its line weight (dot size for a count) and, for an area, its fill: None, outline only; Light, 22%; or Strong, 45%. A preview shows the mark over black linework. Every mark sits on a white halo so it reads over the drawing.
  5. Pick a layer, then draw: a line or run of walls for a length, a box or an area for an area, a cut out to take a part away, and a tap for each item in a count.
  6. Each layer row carries one line under its name: the quote and the line it feeds. Press it to go to that line. A Changed chip, in amber, shows when the quote line no longer carries what the layer measures. Hide and More are at the end of the row. The pen’s layer is a chip in the tools row.
  7. Each layer lists its shapes, such as Area 1 and Area 2, with the layer total under them. Press a layer’s name or a shape’s name, or its pencil, and type over it, such as Rm1 or Community room. Enter saves and Esc leaves it as it was. A shape’s name shows on its row and in a small label in the top-left corner of the shape on the drawing. Press a shape on the drawing, or its row, and both are picked together. By sheet shows each drawing with what was measured on it. Find shows a shape on its drawing. Totals never add two different finishes together.
  8. Each edge of an area and each part of a run shows its length beside it in metres, so you can check it against the drawing by eye. A short edge shows its length once you zoom in. To hide the lengths, press Hide lengths, the ruler in the tools row (on a phone, in "...").
  9. A layer not on a quote yet shows Add to the quote in its Feeds column. Press it to make a new line in a section, or to feed a line already there; if that line already holds a quantity, YourCA shows what it holds and asks before replacing it. Send a layer to a quote line on a draft revision and the line takes its quantity, and moves as you draw. On the quote, the line names its layer, and the name opens that layer on the sheet it is drawn on. Type over the quantity or the unit and it stops following. A line that holds another figure shows its takeoff mark in the Qty box with an amber ring; its card says what changed, and Use takeoff again gives it the takeoff quantity.
  10. A build-up cost priced per unit moves with the takeoff: measure more, and the cost, the line and the Budget move too.
  11. Revise a quote, or copy it for another builder, and each draft line takes the takeoff quantity as it stands.
  12. Download gives the quantities and the shapes as a PDF, Word or Excel file on your letterhead. Each sheet in it shows the lengths and the shape names as the screen does; hide the lengths first for a sheet without them.
Worth knowing

Once a quote on the job is accepted and no draft is left, the takeoff is read only. While a draft is priced, such as extra works after award, you can still measure. An issued quote line never moves. If you cannot price the quote, your drawing does not move a quote line: the line shows Changed until somebody who prices it presses Use takeoff again. The practice job never locks.
